Generator sets for wind farms
Efficient energy with the power of the wind

Our support generator sets for wind farms are designed to ensure auxiliary power supply in extreme conditions and keep key systems operational during any incident.
Auxiliary systems for wind installations
At Genesal Energy, we have a strong international presence in the renewable energy sector, especially in wind energy projects. Since the early development of wind farms, our generator sets have been part of the support system to ensure their operation in the event of any contingency.
Wind farms are often located in areas with high wind exposure. If the wind turbines cannot generate energy or disconnect from the grid, it is crucial that they can continue to orient themselves to avoid structural damage. This is where auxiliary generator sets come into play, allowing the power of the yaw and control systems when no supply is available.
Generator sets for support in wind installations
These units are not only used in emergencies. In many cases, generator sets are employed during the start-up of the park, in maintenance work, or as a stable power source for SCADA systems, hurricane prevention, or communications.
We design each generator set in a customized way to adapt to the characteristics of the environment, the type of park, the electrical topology, and the client's needs. In wind installations, the reliability of the auxiliary system is as important as the main production.

High-power generator set for wind energy: how we size it
In wind farms, we distinguish two types of configuration:
- Individual generator sets for a wind turbine, or for a group of nearby wind turbines.
- Generator sets to supply power to all the wind turbines in the park.
In either case, the generator set must be custom-designed to:
- Ensure proper integration with the hurricane prevention control systems and SCADA systems of the wind farm.
- Ensure reliable and secure communication between the park's control systems and the generator set. These sets integrate the highest technology in communications through the use of fiber optics.
- Facilitate fault detection and maintenance of the generator set to maximize its availability.

Technical comparison
| SETS PER WIND TURBINE | SETS PER WIND FARM | |
|---|---|---|
| Power cable drop | The distance between the generator set and the wind turbine is small, so voltage drops in the cables will be negligible | The distance between the set and the wind turbines is very large, several kilometers, so it is necessary to properly size the cabling between the set and the generator |
| Number of sets | The generator set only powers nearby wind turbines, a maximum of 3, so many generator sets must be placed in the park | Several sets are placed in parallel to supply the power demanded by the wind farm |
| Set size | Small sets | Large sets in parallel |
| Set control | Set control The start and stop are done on demand of the wind turbine's own hurricane prevention system. Integrations with different communication protocols can be performed | Sets start due to network failure and depending on the power demanded by the wind farm |
| Reliability | Partial redundancy in power and cooling. | If the sets fail, the available power may be less than required and the entire park may even be left without power during the hurricane |
| Maintenance | Partial redundancy in power and cooling. | The sets are centralized in one area, so maintenance of all equipment can be done without traveling |
| Backup equipment | Partial redundancy in power and cooling. | The cost of having a backup unit is very high due to the size of the equipment |
| Alternator size | Fully redundant 2N+1 infrastructure. At least 96 hours of protection against voltage drop. | Apart from the loads, the inductance and capacitance of the cables must also be considered as they can be several tens of kilometers. The alternator is greatly oversized to provide the power of the loads with the losses caused by the cabling. Its cost is quite significant |
